Position Summary
The Animal Care Technician ensures that all animals receive compassionate and humane care while maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary shelter environment. This role is responsible for feeding, cleaning, handling, and monitoring animals, as well as assisting with end-of-life services in compliance with policies and state regulations. The position is represented by Union Local 856.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daily care and humane treatment for all animals within the shelter.
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain animal housing areas to ensure a sanitary and safe environment.
  • Feed animals and ensure fresh water is always available.
  • Unload, store, and restock supplies for the Animal Care Department.
  • Obtain certification in euthanasia within six months of hire.
  • Perform euthanasia in accordance with state laws and organizational policies, including owner-present euthanasia when required.
  • Conduct decapitations for select animals as directed by public health regulations.
  • Properly dispose of deceased animals.
  • Perform light maintenance and janitorial tasks to support shelter operations.
  • Assist with training of new staff and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with other departments and provide cross-departmental support as needed.
  • Maintain flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and varied shifts.
  • Carry out additional duties to enhance shelter operations, support public image, and improve the welfare of animals in care.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; six months to one year of related experience or training preferred.
  • Must pass a background check upon hire.
  • Valid California driver’s license with a clean record, eligible for organizational insurance coverage.
  • Ability to manage the emotional aspects of end-of-life services, including humane euthanasia, and provide support to staff in emotionally challenging circumstances.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
  • Professional, compassionate, and team-oriented demeanor.
