Seasonal Shelter Assistant (6 Months)

About the Role
We are looking for a compassionate and dedicated Seasonal Shelter Assistant to join our Veterinary Services team. In this role, you will provide medical and humane care to sheltered animals, assist veterinarians with examinations, and support daily shelter operations. This is a hands-on position ideal for someone who is passionate about animal welfare and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct morning and evening rounds to ensure the well-being of all sheltered animals
- Prepare daily lists of animals requiring veterinary exams
- Administer daily medical treatments as prescribed by staff veterinarians
- Perform health checks prior to adoption, including microchip scanning, ID banding, vaccination, deworming, and photographing animals
- Assist veterinarians with animal examinations
- Support Lost and Found by providing walkthroughs to clients and maintaining related paperwork
- Assist in the Spay & Neuter Clinic, including cleaning of the clinic and surgical instruments, and returning post-surgery animals to their kennels
- Kennel and return animals to the Receiving Department as needed
- Check and log phone messages for Veterinary Assistants
- Sort and organize donated items
- Maintain clean, sanitary, and safe work areas
- Perform general office duties
- May supervise volunteers assisting with shelter treatments
- High school diploma or GED; or six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Must possess a valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record
- Must be available to work weekends and holidays as needed
- Must pass a background check upon hire
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and data entry; willingness to learn Chameleon database software
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50–75 pounds
This position involves routine exposure to animals (including aggressive or feral animals), cleaning chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions. The work environment is typically loud. This role has designated start times due to time-sensitive shelter operations.
